We’re seeing newbie Indian restaurants poppadom-ing up every month and the demand from Londoners for traditional Indian dishes with a contemporary twist is veryyyy high. Other recently opened Indian hotspots include Kricket, Cinnamon Bazaar and DUM London. We can’t get enough and I’m enjoying seeing what each new restaurant brings to the table with their creative menus!
Lokhandwala on Charlotte Street is the newest in the wave of Indian restaurants to hit London and offers a unique tapas menu alongside colonial decor. There is a variety of tapas dishes and a decent selection of vegetarian options.
What we ate:
- Indian cottage cheese and tomato cashew sauce pie
- Vepudu tacos with radish and cauliflower
- Red chowri daal
- Mish mash bun
- Gajar halwa tart
The presentation here is fancy and creative fitting with the imperial setting. I loved receiving my cocktail in a bird cage but sadly the food didn’t have the same wow factor. The cauliflower tacos, paneer pie and gajar halwa dessert were probably my fave dishes of the meal. The panner pie had an indulgently rich cashew sauce with a sweet kick but it can become a bit heavy and sickly if you’re not sharing.
I LOVE a good daal – the memorable, rich ones bursting with spices and flavour. Sadly Lokhandwala’s daal was lacking this for me. It’s hard to make a perfect daal that pleases everyone. Which lentils – yellow, black, green, mixed? How long do you simmer it for? How spicy should it be? There are so many variations and takes on this classic dish! Often a side dish buttt for many vegetarians it is a key item on the menu at an Indian restaurant that should not be overlooked – usually a big decider for me on whether I would want to come back or not.
Overall a nice place to try for a chat over chaat or a special occasion with its beautifully presented dishes and fun drinks. From a veggie perspective, it’s not going to be a go-to spot for me for Indian food and in my opinion the food was overpriced. Although hearty and a decent pie, £16 for the cottage cheese pie did seem a bit spenny for what it was!
