I came to the Canary Wharf Big Easy with a couple of friends for breakfast this week. You can enjoy a nice stroll through the semi open-air tropical Roof Garden in Crossrail Place to reach the Big Easy which is located here. The Roof Garden is calm and surreal with nothing like it in an area dominated by tall office buildings, making it quite a contrasting experience entering the Big Easy with its pumping music and dim lighting. The chain opened another branch in Crossrail Place recently so we were very excited to try it and use our promotional 2 for 1 set breakfast voucher we received when it first opened.
Big Easy is an American themed restaurant with the usual wooden furniture, dim lighting and a red hue running throughout the restaurant – classic features of most American diners or restaurants in London. The restaurant first opened in Chelsea in 1991 and it has grown to include branches in Covent Garden and Canary Wharf.
Big Easy has a large menu with a variety of Deep South inspired dishes, predominately meat focused. As the name suggests, it is big with even bigger portions. There is a bar and lots of seating available, including outdoor seating which would be great in summer.
We had the Big Easy Set Breakfast which is great value at £10. This includes: coffee/tea, juice, pancakes or granola or eggs/toast and a bakery item. This was more than enough food!
Poached Eggs and toast: Nothing special and a bit bland. A lack of flavour and creativity with presentation, although this may just be the plain style the restaurant is going for. The toast was also slightly burnt.
Cronuts: This was our first cronut experience and it was great to finally see what the fuss over this croissant-donut hybrid is all about. This was the best part of the meal for me. We got the chocolate fudge and custard cronuts. Both very sweet and yummy. I preferred the chocolate fudge one. Tastes like a croissant, but has the thickness and texture of a donut.
Now on to the interesting service. It all felt a bit weird. To describe it in one word it was strange. Nobody seemed to really know what items on the menu contained and everything felt a bit slow paced. Not ideal when you’re trying to squeeze in a nice breakfast before work.
Summary: American themed crab shack restaurant with an extensive Deep South inspired menu – very meat focused. Located in the beautiful Roof Garden at Crossrail Place. The Set Breakfast is great value at £10 for a lot of food – the cronuts were my favourite part of the whole experience. Dim lighting and noisy but I’m generally not a fan of these big TGI style restaurants. Slow paced service and staff had to keep referring to other staff members about menu queries which was annoying. Not in a rush to come back here anytime soon.
