The W Dining Series

I was very eager to try The W vegan takeover by Ravinder Bhogal as soon as I first heard about it and drooled over the mouth-watering menu. It’s not often a restaurant in London launches a vegan menu takeover. This is the second in the W hotel’s dining series at The Perception Bar, the first being a menu by Magnus Reid. Based on my first experience of the dining series, I’m definitely looking forward to finding out which chef will be curating the menu for July.

W dining series

Ravinder Bhogal is the talented chef behind hotspot Jikoni and the food blog cookinboots. The vibrant menu of Asian inspired plant based dishes is a love letter to her niece who became vegan and inspired Ravinder to think about a different way of cooking. The Perception Bar is chic, calm and contrasts with the hustle and bustle of Wardour Street which it overlooks. The bar at the back of the restaurant (which also has a DJ) is perfect for post work drinks.

We ate:

  • Cauliflower popcorn, thai basil tempura, vinegar and chilli dip
  • Besan fritters, coconut yoghurt, curry leaf
  • Sweet potato gnocchi, Asian, mushroom ragout, sweet potato crisps, crispy kale
  • Caramel braised tofu, confit garlic rice, smacked chilli cucumber
  • Rose, cardamom and coconut doughnuts
  • Saffron mango and passion fruit cheesecake

The food here is colourful and beautifully presented with decorative garnishing. The most memorable dishes for me were the besan fritters and dessert doughnuts. The cauliflower popcorn included a generous sized portion of tempura cauliflower made flavourful with the vinegar and chilli dip. I really enjoyed the sweet flavour of the caramel braised tofu, however this dish contained a bit too much white rice and not enough of the delicious tofu for me. The rose and cardamom flavour of the doughnuts were the perfect sweet ending to the meal. They were soft and gooey, reminding me of the hot doughnuts everyone loves at markets. I would go back just for these! The service was excellent throughout the night making it a lovely dinner spot for a special occasion and to try a wonderful range of plant inspired meals.

Rating: 7/10
Perfect for: A special occasion, date night, group dinner
