Calcutta Street

Since watching Kolkata with Sue Perkins on BBC (I know it was just a TV show, but it’s the closest I’ve been to the city which I am hoping I am lucky enough to travel to one day) which gave me a glimpse in to the vibrant hustle and bustle of Calcutta, I have been intrigued by Bengali culture and the amazing food the city has to offer. I’m glad I was able to finally experience some home style Bengali dining at Calcutta Street and only just a tube journey away.

Calcutta Street is a hot new opening in Fitzrovia founded by Shrimoyee who was inspired by the incredible Bengali food she experienced growing up. A cute and simplistic restaurant with pops of calm blue and décor that gives you a taste of Bengali culture (a lot of the furniture is actually from Calcutta – can it get more authentic!?). I went to the restaurant’s soft launch for lunch this week and was very pleased with both the meal and service.

Firstly, I have to point out how lovely Shrimoyee is. She is happy to chat to diners, explain dishes on the menu and give her recommendations of veggie friendly dishes. All the recipes are her own and she even got her hands dirty in the kitchen and made the paneer posto we ate for our lunch, which was EVERYTHING by the way. The cashew paste was popping with flavour making it my favourite dish of the meal.

What I ate:
Beguni
Paneer Posto
Alur Bhaja
Musurir Daal
Roti
Rice

The menu includes a variety of dishes and drinks as well as a separate lunch menu which offers paneer and chola rolls as vegetarian options. There are more than enough vegetarian dishes to choose from so veggies won’t struggle here. The restaurant is all about home style cooking and you really feel this through the food and atmosphere. I especially loved the colourful door and shutter blinds style menu. It’s a very nice touch.

Soft launch with 20% off finishes at the end of the month.
