The Gate

The past few years have seen a rise in the number of vegetarian restaurants and veggie friendly dishes featured on restaurant menus. ‘Meat Free Mondays’, Pret’s veggie pop up and the increasing number of flexitarians (sometimes carnivore, sometimes vegetarian) demonstrates the increasing popularity of the veggie life. Finally, more and more people are realising that vegetarians don’t just eat a plate of salad and vegetables for dinner.

Vegetarian food is not typically associated with fine dining, however the number of vegetarian eateries serving up high quality food paired with the popularity of health conscious lifestyles is trending. But let’s not forget London’s long standing vegetarian restaurants that have stood the test of time – one the most well-known is The Gate in Islington.

The Gate Review

The restaurant was founded by Adrian and Michael Daniel and has been a huge success since 1989. The food reflects influences from their diverse cultural background and the menu includes a large selection of French and Italian inspired dishes.

When I first entered, the décor felt a bit like I had walked into a fancy pub, but that feeling soon went away. The food is visually appealing and plays with a range of flavours and textures.

We started with a mezze platter which was great for variety but mediocre in terms of flavour. We weren’t fans of the three lentil pate terrine but really enjoyed the quiche and halloumi.

The aubergine teriyaki was my favourite part of the meal. The crispy coated aubergine and creamy sauce worked well together and the side of garden garnished olive mash was also delicious.

Great vegan cheesecake to end the meal. Dairy free, but tasted just as good!
