Gyoza Bar

When TimeOut offered a Bao Board at Gyoza Bar for £16, I couldn’t resist! This included sweet potato fries, dumplings, a bao steamed bun and ramen noodle soup.

Gyoza Bar recently opened on St Martins Lane in Covent Garden after its success in other foodie cities, such as Paris and Vancouver. As the name suggests, the gyoza dumplings are the speciality here. Strangely the selection of other modern Japanese dishes on the menu, including bao buns and ramen noodle soup, is greater than the gyoza selection. The restaurant is small with minimalist décor including open brick walls, wooden tables and a burst of vibrant orange.

Sweet potato chips
The chips were crispy and delicious with the spicy mayo dip.

Vegetable Gyoza
Flavoursome and I really enjoyed the avocado salsa the dumplings were garnished with. The dumplings were slightly oily.

Bao Bun
Oh how I love a bao bun! This was my favourite part of the meal. The steamed bun contained lettuce, fried sweet potato, fried mushroom and tasty sauces. Delicious.

Vegetable ramen noodle soup
I was pretty full by this point and the ramen noodle soup was big! I enjoyed the tofu pieces which were crispy and slightly sweet, but I was disappointed with the miso broth which was lacking flavour. I probably wouldn’t order this again.

Overall a lovely meal at Gyoza bar. Great modern Japanese food, with some dishes being more memorable than others. Good service and a veggie friendly menu. I was quite surprised by how many dishes the restaurant offered other than dumplings which is great for variety but it does take the focus away from their specialty of gyoza.
